چکیده

The microstructure and fatigue performance of three sub-solvus heat treated nickel based disc superalloys for turbine disc applications are reported. The alloy variants studied are RR1000, N18 and Udimet 720 Low Interstitial (U720Li), with the latter tested both in a standard and large grain variant (LG). Their microstructures are examined in terms of grain and gamma prime size (γ'). Fatigue crack growth (FCG) rates for all materials at 650oC show that RR1000 provides the best performance, followed by U720Li-LG, N18 and U720Li. Some of the variations in FCG rate between the alloys are due to reduction in grain boundary oxidation processes with increased grain size, but more subtle interplays between grain boundary character, alloy composition and slip character are also important.

Effects of microstructures on fatigue crack initiation and short crack propagation at room temperature in an advanced disc superalloy

Fatigue crack initiation and early short crack propagation behaviour in two microstructural variants of a recently developed Low Solvus, High Refractory (LSHR) disc superalloy at room temperature has been investigated by three-point bending with replication procedure. The results shows that fine gained (FG) LSHR possesses higher fatigue life due to its better crack initiation resistance, limite...

Thermal activation of fatigue crack growth: analysing the mechanisms of fatigue crack propagation in superalloys

A method for deriving apparent activation energies, Eapp, for fatigue crack growth (FCG) is presented. It is shown how these Eapp values can be used to analyse the main underlying mechanism causing the progression of the crack. The Eapp values for fatigue crack growth in air and vacuum, and with and without a dwell are obtained for a range of Ni based superalloys for turbine disc applications. ...

Influence of orientation-dependent grain boundary oxidation on fatigue cracking behaviour in an advanced Ni-based superalloy

Fatigue tests have been conducted on an advanced disc Ni-based superalloy (Low Solvus, High Refractory (LSHR) alloy) at 650 C in air under three-point bend loading to investigate the role of orientation-dependent grain boundary oxidation in crack initiation and early propagation. It is found that crack initiation occurs mainly from bulged grain boundary oxides, and cracks then predominantly pro...

FATIGUE THRESHOLDS OF CRACKS RESULTING FROM IMPACT DAMAGE TO -TiAl

Significant research has been conducted in recent years on the -based titanium aluminide alloys. The low density of -TiAl relative to current nickel-based superalloys, has made it an attractive candidate for use in the low-pressure turbine blades of gas turbine engines [1]. In addition to weight savings, the lower density leads to higher specific stiffness and good high temperature strength r...

High frequency fatigue crack propagation behavior of a nickel-base turbine disk alloy

Fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted on the powder metallurgy nickel-base superalloy KM4 at room temperature. Two different heat treatments were investigated, one which produced a relatively coarse grain size around 55 μm, and another which produced a very fine grain size around 6 μm. Tests were conducted at 50 Hz and 1000 Hz in an advanced servohydraulic testing machine at R-ratios b...
